Life Story for Mrs. Ruth A. (Brameier) Schwade

Mrs. Ruth A. (Brameier) Schwade
Mrs. Ruth A. (Brameier) Schwade, age 102, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life with her twin sister, Mary on December 21, 1911, at their home, in Switzerland County near Markland, Indiana, to the late, William Henry & Louisa (Beckman) Brameier. In 1913, the government approached Ruth's father, William about selling 3 acres for the new Lock & Dam 39. The family sold the 3 acres and moved to another house on the property when Ruth & Mary were 2 years old. Ruth always enjoyed playing with her sister, Mary who was always the leader. She was raised in Switzerland County, Indiana, where she attended one-room school houses at the Gullion & Markland grade schools. When construction began at Markland, Ruth & Mary's father & his brother, Charles saw an opportunity & built a store & a pool hall on the road leading to the construction site. The store carried work clothing, tobacco, soft drinks, medicine, candy & cookies. Ruth remembered her uncle, Charles one time tied a bag of candy to a dog's tail & sent the dog home with candy for kids. Ruth was a 1930 graduate of Vevay High School in Vevay, Indiana. To control the locks on the Lock & Dam 39, a power house was built. Ruth & Mary's first job was working at the powerhouse as a Teletype Operator at the Markland Dam, for several years. They recorded boats, river levels & temperatures. This information was passed on so that the lockage of the boats could be coordinated. Ruth then met Dilver W. Schwade at church. Since Ruth was now 18 she was allowed to date. Ruth & Dilver's first date was a trip to the Hoosier Theater in Vevay, Indiana. Ruth was united in marriage on December 30, 1931, in Florence, Indiana, to the late, Dilver W. Schwade & to this union arrived a daughter, Jean to bless their home. Ruth & Dilver moved to a farm near Quercus Grove, Indiana, where they lived in a 14 room house. When they married they bought a house full of furniture from a store in Aurora, Indiana & paid $10.00 down on $500.00 worth of furniture. They had cows, pigs, sheep, chickens & geese. Twenty cows required milking every day. They would go into the field & milk the cows where they stood. Processing of the milk was all manual labor. She loaded bales of hay unto wagons & into the barn. Ruth regularly drove the tractors on the farm but could not drive a car. In 1961, she talked her husband into getting a smaller car to teach her how to drive. Ruth & Dilver shared nearly 31 years of marriage together until Dilver passed away on May 13, 1962. After Dilver's passing, Ruth went to work at the school for one year. Needing a full time job, Ruth applied to work at the Osborn Clothing Store in Vevay, Indiana. Ruth was employed as a Clerk & worked there for almost 20 years. For the first 10 years, she drove to town daily. In 1972, Ruth moved into town. While working at the Osborn's Clothing Store, Ruth used her vacation time to extensively travel around the United States. Ruth was a former Clerk at her fathers store at the Markland Dam. Ruth resided in the Switzerland County Community all of her life & in the Vevay Community since 1972. In 1952, Ruth began attending the Quercus Grove United Methodist Church in Quercus Grove, Indiana, where she became a faithful member in 1962. Ruth enjoyed crocheting, sewing & squirrel hunting.
