Life Story for Mr. Charles W. "Pete" Furnish

Mr. Charles W. "Pete"  Furnish
Mr. Charles W. "Pete" Furnish, age 78, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on October 14, 1936, in Vevay, Indiana, the son of the late, Carl Curtis & Florence (Unwiller) Furnish. He was raised in Vevay, Indiana & was a 1954 graduate of Vevay High School, where he was a varsity player in all the high school sports & received 16 varsity letters. After high school, Pete was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on January 27, 1956, in Louisville, Kentucky, where he received the Good Conduct Medal. Pete was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on January 26, 1959, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Pete was united in marriage on May 4, 1959, at the Ruter Chapel United Methodist Church in Vevay, Indiana, to Janice Rahe Lakeman & to this union arrived three daughters to bless their home. Pete was employed as a Machinist at Seagram's Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, retiring in 1990, after 35 years of service. He was in charge of maintenance for Switzer Square in Vevay, Indiana, from 2002 to present. He served on the Vevay Town Council, from 1990-2000 & from 2004-2008. Pete served on the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste District in Versailles, Indiana & the Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning in Versailles, Indiana, where he was Vice Chairman since 1990. He received an award from Wal-Mart for his service & dedication to his community. In 1999, Pete received the Paul W. Ogle Community Service Award for his outstanding leadership in the betterment of the community & his unselfish giving of his time which had enriched the lives of all citizens of Switzerland County. Pete was a Charter Member of the Board of Directors for the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, serving from 1997-2000. He was a member of the International Association of Machinist & Aerospace Workers Local #1391, the Vevay American Legion Post #185 & the East Enterprise United Methodist Church, where he was a Lay Leader. Pete will be remembered for his dedication to his community, watching & playing sports & his grandchildren. Pete died at 2:05 am, Friday, October 31, 2014, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Pete will be missed by his daughters: Rahe Jean Griffin of East Enterprise, IN, Kaulene Green & her husband: Joe of Vevay, IN; his grandchildren: Ryan Griffin & his wife: Vicki, Leslie Green, Brenna Green & Kyle Green; his great-grandchildren: Chloe Ellyn Griffin, Audrey Rayn Griffin & Tucker Charles Lewis Griffin; his several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Carl Curtis & Florence (Unwiller) Furnish; his life long friend: Janice Rahe (Lakeman) Furnish; his daughter: Deborah Ann Furnish; his sisters: Joann Craig & Barbara Lyons; his brother: Eddie Furnish.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at 11:00 am, by Rev. Lenny Thorpe, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
