Life Story for Garvey "Vernon" Robinson

Mr. Garvey "Vernon" Robinson, age 88, of Moorefield, Indiana, entered this life on June 14, 1926, in Sparta, Kentucky, the son of the late, Garvey Penn & Jennie Dee (Bruce) Robinson. He was raised on Taterbug & attended school in Switzerland County, Indiana. Vernon was inducted into the United States Army on July 24, 1945, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, serving in Company "B" Airborne School Regiment during World War II & received the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private on February 22, 1946 at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was inducted into the United States Army on February 23, 1946, at Fort Benning, Georgia, serving in the Service Company 505th Parachute Infantry 82nd Airborne Division, during World War II. Vernon received the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, the World War II Victory Medal, the Parachute Badge & the Rifle Marksman. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on March 26, 1947, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Vernon was later inducted into the United States Army on November 6, 1950 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, serving during the Korean War. He received the Occupation Medal Japan. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on October 13, 1951 at Camp Carson, Colorado. Vernon was united in marriage to Lorraine Scudder & later to Anna Hastings & Della Petrakos. Vernon was a retired Civil Service employee for the Naval Ordnance in Louisville, Kentucky, retiring January 5, 1984, after 15 years of service. He was a former Ordnance Crew & Gunner employee for the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison, Indiana, for 15 years. He was a construction worker for the Markland Dam Project in Markland, Indiana. Vernon was a dump truck driver for Dave O'mara Paving Company during the construction of the Highway 129 project, for 3 years. Vernon resided for the past 50 years in the Moorefield community where he farmed all of his life. Vernon was a lifetime member of the Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion & the Madison VFW Post 1969. Vernon will be remembered for his love of gardening & raising his beagles. Vernon died at 1:40 am, Monday, April 13, 2015, at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville, Indiana.

Vernon will be missed by his sons: Cecil Vernon "Butch" Robinson of Chelsea, IN, Stanley Robinson of Moorefield, IN & Kyle Robinson & his wife: Evonna of Moorefield, IN; his grandchildren: John Vernon Robinson of Chelsea, IN, Travis Chatham & his wife: Chrystal of Ghent, KY & Scotti Sullivan & her husband: Bryan of Bossier City, LA & his great-grandchildren: Wyatt Chatham & Natalie Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Garvey Penn & Jennie Dee (Bruce) Robinson; his sons: Harold Vernon Robinson, died February 26, 1977 & Perry Lewis Robinson, died April 14, 1993.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 17, 2015, at 11:00 am, by Pastor KC Banta, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.

Friends may call 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

A final salute will be conducted on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street in Vevay, Indiana with full military honors to be conducted at the Vevay Cemetery by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.
