Life Story for Claude Virgil Deaton

Claude Virgil  Deaton
Mr. Claude Virgil Deaton, age 91, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on March 7, 1926, in Bowling Town, Kentucky, the loving son of the late, William and Jesse (Clark) Deaton. He was raised in Bowling Town, Kentucky where he attended school. Claude was inducted into the United States Army in 1949, serving during the Korean War. He earned the bronze star for valor and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on October 28, 1952. Claude was united in marriage on October 24, 1953, in Oak Forrest, Indiana, to Petronella Louise Tebbe and to this union arrived a daughter and four sons to bless their home. Claude and Pat shared over 64 years of marriage together until his death. Claude was a former lineman for Public Service of Indiana for 21 years. Claude resided in Connersville, Indiana, from 1953 - 1968 and moved to the Vevay community in 1968. He co-owned and co-operated with his wife the Vevay IGA, from 1969 - 2000. He spent countless hours working in the grocery store and delivering groceries to the elderly and the shut ins. Claude was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185, Vevay VFW Post #5396, Amvets Club in Connersville, Indiana and the Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church in Vevay, Indiana. Claude enjoyed fishing, reading, working crossword puzzles and playing euchre and rook. Claude will be deeply missed by his loving family and his community. Claude passed away at 5:44 a.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Claude is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Petronella Louise "Pat" (Tebbe) Deaton of Vevay, IN; his daughter, Sheila Gault and her husband: Larry of Vevay, IN; his sons, Greg Deaton and his wife: Jean of Madison, IN, Kent Deaton of Vevay, IN and Todd Deaton of Franklin, IN; his grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas, Kevin, Christopher, Jacob, Colin, Gabriel, Philip, Jennifer, Mathew, Ryan, Jessica and Rachel; his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Kennedy, Gavin, Nolan, Linkon, Lukas and Adaline; his brothers, Doy Deaton and his wife: Iris Jean of Columbia, SC, Bill Deaton of Brookville, IN and Mack Deaton of Brookville, IN; his sisters, Ethel Handley of Brookville, IN, Bobby Jean Ratliff of Indianapolis, IN and Marjorie Meyer and her husband: Bob of Brookville, IN; his brother-in-law, Charlie Hofer of Brookville, IN and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Jesse (Clark) Deaton; his son, Eric Deaton; his sisters, Marie Dunbar and Lottie Hofer and his brother, Tucker Deaton.

The Funeral Mass will be conducted Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 1:00 pm, by Father Don Buchanan, at the Most Sorrowful Mother of God Catholic Church, 513 North Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.

Friends may call 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Memorial contributions may be made to Switzerland County Public Library or Vevay American Legion Post #185 Relief Fund. Cards are available at the funeral home.
