Obituary for Dr. John Chris Sieglitz

Dr. John Chris Sieglitz, age 83, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on July 21, 1937 in Madison, Indiana. He was the son of Charles Worth and Loraine Elsie (Pendry) Sieglitz. He was raised in Vevay, Indiana and was a 1955 graduate of Vevay High School. After graduation, Chris moved to the Indianapolis community and worked for New York Central Railroad for a couple of years. After spending some time there, he decided that he would accept an offer from his grandfather, Opp Sieglitz where he would study to be an optometrist. Chris graduated in 1961 from Indiana University School where he received his bachelor's degree in arts and science and his master's of optometry degree. His grandfather passed away just 10 days before Chris got his license. Chris was united in marriage to Sundra Lou Penick on January 5, 1961 in Marshall, Illinois. This happy union was blessed with two sons, John and Stephen. Dr. Sieglitz had been working with his grandfather before he got his license to practice independently that was located above where the current First Financial Bank in Vevay, Indiana is located. Chris stated he used to carry patients up the stairs in a hard-back chair until 1969 when he moved to the 121 West Main Street location to better serve the Switzerland County community and surrounding counties. Dr. Sieglitz was required to have continuous education of 40 hours every two years. He took great interest in his patients and was wonderful with children. Dr. Sieglitz was very well respected in the community and by the medical community throughout Southeast Indiana. Chris was later united in marriage on August 21, 1999 in Vevay, Indiana to Carol Ann Ramsey and they shared over 21 years of marriage together until his death. Chris and the Sieglitz family was honored by the State of Indiana for the long and successful life of their family's optometry practice. Dr. Sieglitz was awarded the state's Century Business Award by lieutenant governor Joe Kernan. The award is presented annually to selected Indiana businesses that are more than 100 years old and have a history of community service. After 53 years of dedication to his community, Chris retired in 2013. Chris was a former member of the Vevay Kiwanis Club for several years. Dr. Sieglitz also served as former president of the Switzerland County Health Board for several years. Chris had several hobbies such as boating, camping, fly fishing and woodworking as well as photography. He did a little bit of artwork and had an interest in computers like his sons, John and Stephen. Chris passed away at 5:15 a.m., Saturday, February 6, 2021, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Chris will be deeply missed by his wife, Carol Ann (Ramsey) Sieglitz of Vevay, IN; his son, John Sieglitz of Vevay, IN; his step-son, David Henninger and his wife, Angie of Milford, OH; his step-grandchildren, Alex and Taylor Henninger of Milford, OH; his sisters, Sue Landau and Mary Shera of Carmel, IN; his caregiver and nephew, Kirk Shera of Vevay, IN; his other 3 nieces and 2 nephews; his great niece and 3 great-nephews and abundance of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Worth Sieglitz, died February 23, 1987 and Loraine Elsie (Pendry) Sieglitz, died July 7, 1984; his son, Stephen Christopher "Steve" Sieglitz, died January 7, 2021; his brother, Charles Edward Sieglitz, died December 19, 2013 and his step-mother, Catherine Ross (Thayer) Sieglitz, died September 29, 2018.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required along with social distancing. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2021, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
