Obituary for Evelyn "Jean" Morton (Furnish)

Mrs. Evelyn "Jean" (Furnish) Morton, age 93, of Pleasant, Indiana, was born April 27, 1929 to Earl Raymond and Hazel Irene (Osborn) Furnish at their home near Fairview, Indiana, the second of five children. She grew up on the family farm and learned to milk cows by hand at a very young age. She also told that she had to pick off tobacco worms from the plants and put them in a can, a job she hated! In the winter she and her two sisters slept in one bed upstairs with hot water bottles and when morning came they would rush downstairs and get dressed by the stove. After graduating from Vevay High School in 1947, Jean attended a business school in Cincinnati, Ohio. While attending school she lived with and worked for a family as their nanny. After business school she returned home and was employed in the office of the US Shoe Factory and helped her family on the farm. In those days she Shoe Factory would select a "Queen" annually and one year Jean was chosen. Leon "Shorty" Morton was stationed in Arlington, Virginia in the army and read an article in the Vevay Newspaper about Jean being Queen. He called Jean and when he came home they began dating and were married on November 6, 1953. They worked for Shorty's parents, OP and Lizzie Morton in their store for several years and were blessed with two children, Karen and Donny. In 1969, Jean and Shorty built their own store, S & J Market. They worked countless hours each week and their business thrived. Jean was famous for her ham salad and cheese salad and everyone knew Friday was Jean's hair appointment - the only time she wasn't in the store. Jean's family was very close and would frequently have Sunday dinners and play cards. All the cousins were very fortunate to have such great role models and a lot of great memories. Jean attended the Brushy Fork Baptist Church near Pleasant, Indiana and was a former member of the St. Mary's Home Economics Club. After Shorty's death in 2003, Jean sold their house and store and moved next to Donny where she stayed busy gardening, working on genealogy, reading and walking, as well as, helping her children however she could. She also loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022, at her residence.

She was a kind, humble, "frugal", hard working woman who will be missed by her daughter, Karen Hall and her husband, Terry of Pleasant, IN; her son, Donny Morton and his wife, Karen of Pleasant, IN; her grandchildren, Keli Miller and her husband, Travis, Ashley Miller and her husband, Kris and Caleb Hall and his wife, Megan; her great-grandchildren, Grant Hall, Kassidy Gabbard, Clayton Hall and Emily and Taylor Miller; her sister, Vera Wolf of Madison, IN; her brother, Earl Furnish of Vevay, IN; her sister-in-law, Virginia Ralston of Ohio and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
