Obituary for James Robert "Butch" Hilligoss

Mr. James Robert "Butch" Hilligoss, age 78, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on November 26, 1940, in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the son of the late, John Hilligoss and Lucy (Florence) Kirkendall. He was a 1960 graduate of Vevay High School in Vevay, Indiana. Butch was inducted into the United States Air Force on February 14, 1961, in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving during the Vietnam War. He received the Good Conduct Metal and was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class on February 12, 1965, at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. Butch was united in marriage on August 26, 1961, at the Vevay Church of Christ, to Peggy Jean Pike. This happy union was blessed with three sons and a daughter. Butch and Peggy shared 58 years of marriage together until his death. Butch was employed for Hide-Away Farms in Florence, Indiana, for 12 years and for Rexnord in Madison, Indiana, for 3 years. He was a member of the Florence Church of Christ in Florence, Indiana. Butch will be remembered for his love of cars, gardening and fishing. Butch passed away at 2:55 p.m., Friday, September 13, 2019, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Butch will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Peggy Jean (Pike) Hilligoss of Vevay, IN; his sons, James Robert "Bobby" Hilligoss, II and his wife, Pamela of Florence, IN, Roger Dale Hilligoss of Rising Sun, IN and Richard Keith Hilligoss and his wife, Susan of Vevay, IN; his daughter, Roxanna Janene Williams and her husband, Terry of Elkhart, IN; his 10-grandchildren, 15-great-grandchildren and 1-great-great-grandchild; his brothers, John William Hilligoss and his wife, Joyce of Big Rapids, MI, Victor Kirkendall and his wife, Loretta Dawn of Haughton, LA; his mother-in-law, Frances Lorraine (Peters) Pike of Vevay, IN; his sister-in-law, Shirley Neal of Columbus, OH and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Hilligoss and Lucy (Florence) Kirkendall; his step-father, John Kirkendall; his sister, Shirley Peelman; his brother, Joe Kirkendall; his father-in-law, Ralph Pike; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Neal and his step-granddaughter, Carrie Ann Magyar.

A Celebration of Butch's life will be held by his family from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2019, at the Switzerland County 4-H Community Building, 507 Vineyard Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Full military rites will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2019, by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396, at the Switzerland County 4-H Community Building, 507 Vineyard Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
