Obituary for Roberta Joyce Scudder (Woolums)
Mrs. Roberta Joyce (Woolums) Scudder, age 82, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on June 5, 1938 in Owen County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Orman and Mary Blanche (Hopper) Woolums. She was raised in Owen County, Kentucky where she attended Owen County High School. Roberta was united in marriage on August 24, 1957 at the Bennington United Methodist Church to Hilbert "Hibbie" Scudder. This happy union was blessed with a daughter, Leah. Roberta and Hibbie shared over 60 years of marriage together until he passed away on October 5, 2017. Roberta was employed for the US Shoe Factory in Vevay, Indiana for 18 years. Roberta and Hibbie built many homes in Vevay, Indiana from 1977 - 1990. They owned and operated Scudder Department Store for 17 years, Bargain Furniture and Hilbert Scudder Construction. Roberta was a member of the Switzerland County Democrat Party and served as a precinct committee person. She also served as a Jefferson Township Trustee and served on the Switzerland County Zoning Board. She was a member of the Bennington United Methodist Church in Bennington, Indiana. Roberta resided in the Switzerland County community since 1957. Roberta and Hibbie enjoyed selling fresh produce, mums and hanging baskets at their home on Main Street. Roberta will be remembered for her love of flowers and attending auctions. Roberta passed away at 1:30 a.m., Sunday, November 22, 2020, at the Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Roberta will be missed by her daughter, Leah Hon of Vevay, IN; her granddaughter, Lauren Taylor Hon and her companion, James Walls of Vevay, IN; her great-grandson, Wade Walls; her step-granddaughters, Julia Hon of Vevay, IN and Rachel (Hon) York and her husband, Brandon of Rising Sun, IN; her step-great-grandchildren, Braxton, Brayden, Camden and Olivia York; her brother, Rick Woolums and his wife, Kathy of Vevay, IN and her several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orman Woolums, died January 28, 1988 and Mary Blanche (Hopper) Woolums, died November 25, 2003; her husband, Hilbert "Hibbie" Scudder, Jr., died October 5, 2017 and her sisters, Anna Mae Works-Furnish, died July 5, 2014 and Edwina "Winnie" (Woolums) Embry, died July 1, 2020.
