Obituary for Ruth V. Delay (Sowards)
Ruth V. (Sowards) Delay, age 79, of Columbus, Indiana, entered this life on October 2, 1942 in Huntington, West Virginia. She was the loving daughter of David Wilson Sowards and Helen Louise (Gibson) Sowards Cox Werner, whom preceded her in death. She was raised in Huntington, West Virginia and was a 1960 graduate of Barboursville High School. Ruth received her associates degree in business from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Ruth was employed as a key puncher, computer operator and accountant for Reliance Electric in Columbus, Indiana, retiring in 2002, after 34 years of service. Ruth resided in the Switzerland County community for two years. Ruth was a former secretary for the Vevay High School for a few years. She was a member of the Parkside Baptist Church in Columbus, Indiana. Ruth enjoyed reading, gardening and socializing with her family and friends. Ruth passed away at 8:44 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Traditions of Columbus in Columbus, Indiana.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Gregory Todd Delay of Seymour, IN and Jeffry Alan Delay and his wife, Tracey of Avon, IN; her grandchildren, Haley Nicol Davenport and her husband, Justin, Ryan James Delay and his wife, Lauren, Justin Nicholas Delay and his fiancée, Mary and Madison Grace Delay; her great-grandchildren, Bradley James Delay, Evalyn June Davenport and Joselynn Paige Davenport; her siblings, Mary Louise Freyn of Scipio, IN, Dale Edward Sowards of Fredericksburg, VA, John Henry Sowards of Elizabethtown, KY and Timothy Allan Sowards of Huntington, WV and her nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, David Wilson Sowards, Sr.; her mother, Helen Louise (Gibson) Sowards Cox Werner; her brother, David Wilson Sowards; her daughter-in-law, Connie Sue Delay and her step-father, Carroll T. Cox.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 2, 2022, by Dr. William E. Bailey, Pastor, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043.
Ruth's cremains will be placed in the Delay family columbarium in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana at a later date.
