Life Story for Dale J. Stevens

Dale J.  Stevens
Mr. Dale J. Stevens, age 93, of East Enterprise, Indiana, entered this life on June 11, 1922, on Pickett's Road in Switzerland County, Indiana, the son of the late, Floyd and Emma (Hagerman) Stevens. He was raised in East Enterprise, Indiana and was a 1941 graduate of the Vevay High School. Dale was united in marriage on July 6, 1942, by Rev. Fred Griffith at the Switzerland Baptist Parsonage in Vevay, Indiana, to the late, Elberta M. "Bertie" Whitham and to this union arrived three children, Nick, Sandra Jo and Todd to bless their home. Dale and Bertie shared 73 loving years of marriage together until Bertie passed away on July 31, 2015. Dale was inducted into the United States Army on October 19, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, serving during World War II in the Southern Philippines, Luzon, New Guinea & Bismarck Archipelago. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Technician 5th Grade on October 4, 1945, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Dale was employed for the Vevay Ball Park for a short period of time. He was also employed for the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison, Indiana. He retired as a brick mason from the Joseph E. Seagram & Sons in 1984 after 43 years of service. Dale was a member of the Florence Masonic Lodge No.27 F&AM and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. He was a life member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185. Dale was a former treasurer and trustee for the Jacksonville Cemetery for several years. Dale was a member of the New Liberty Baptist Church where he served as a vice moderator, deacon, song leader and also taught Sunday school. Dale and Bertie resided in the East Enterprise community for the past 64 years. Dale enjoyed woodworking, farming, building furniture, singing and music. Dale was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Dale passed away at 10:00 am, Monday, September 21, 2015, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Dale will be dearly missed by his loving daughter: Sandra Jo Konkle & her husband: Eddie of Vevay, IN; his sons: Nelson Ray "Nick" Stevens & his wife: Cynthia of Delhi, OH & Todd Eric Stevens & his wife: Darlene of Patriot, IN; his grandchildren: Steven Konkle & his wife: Janie, Rhonda Knue & her husband: Doug, Stephanie Case & her husband: Bill, Alan Konkle & his wife: Angel, Christopher D. Stevens & his wife: Sarah, Zachary Stevens, Kristian Stevens & her fiancé: Jerrett Caseltine, Shon Todd Stevens & Abbey Frank; his great-grandchildren: Chloe Knue, Grant Knue, Tanner Knue, Alisha Konkle, Kayla Cornett & her husband: Jake, Kyle Konkle, Tyler Konkle, Kelsi Konkle, Morgan Case, Madison Case, Madison Stevens, Landon Caseltine & Justine Caseltine; his sister: Avalon Murray of Columbus, IN & his several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Floyd & Emma (Hagerman) Stevens; his wife of 73 years: Elberta M. "Bertie" (Whitham) Stevens, died July 31, 2015; his sister: Marjorie Brett, died March 3, 1999; his brother: Charles W. "Chuck" Stevens, died March 19, 2001; his nephew: Robert D. Brett, died July 17, 1984; his great-nephew: Chipper Moore, died November 10, 1974 & his brothers-in-law: Billy Joe "Buck" Murray, died January 16, 1984 & Charles J. Brett, died May 28, 1978.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 28, 2015, at 11:00 am, by Rev. Ron Lee, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana. Full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 & the Vevay VFW Post #5396 at the cemetery.

Friends may call 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Sunday, September 27, 2015, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Masonic Services will be held at 7:00 pm, Sunday, September 27, 2015, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Liberty Baptist Church or to the Switzerland Baptist Church. Cards are available at the funeral home.
