Life Story for Thomas Benton "Tommy" May Jr.

Thomas Benton "Tommy"  May Jr.
Mr. Thomas Benton "Tommy" May, Jr., age 87, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on December 5, 1927, in Owen County, Kentucky, the son of the late Thomas Benton, Sr. and Mabel (Welch) May. He was raised until the age of 16 in Trimble County and Carroll County, Kentucky. At the age of 16, the family moved to Wolf Run Road in Jefferson County, Indiana. Tommy was a 1946 graduate of Central High School on Ryker's Ridge and attended Hanover College for a year. Tommy was united in marriage on October 1, 1949, in Pleasureville, Kentucky, to Carmethia Ann Tullis and to this union arrived a son & four daughters to bless their home. He briefly worked at Kurfees Paint in Louisville, Kentucky and at their Madison store. Tommy had resided in Switzerland County, Indiana, since 1951 and had resided on Tapp's Ridge since 1957 where he and Ann farmed the family farm together. They operated a dairy farm and raised cattle, corn & tobacco. He worked construction during the building of the Markland Dam for a short time. Tommy was raised in the Cove Hill Baptist Church in Carroll County, Kentucky and attended the Fredonia Baptist Church on Tapp's Ridge in Switzerland County, Indiana. He was a member of the Antique Tractor Club in Bedford, Kentucky. Tommy will be remembered for how he lovingly cared for his wife as she fought the dreaded disease of Alzheimer's. He was an avid reader, a hunter and a lifetime follower of Kentucky basketball and the Cincinnati Reds. He enjoyed coon hunting, gardening, farming, attending the farmer's market in Vevay, going to auctions, collecting antiques, but most of all a hard days work on the farm. Tommy and Ann were fixtures on Tapp's Ridge and were often seen on the front porch offering a friendly gesture to those that passed by. Tommy passed away at 8:40 am, Saturday, October 31, 2015, at his residence in Vevay, Indiana.

Tommy will be dearly missed by his daughters: Julie Moore & her husband: Joe of Hanover, IN, Kathy Barton & her husband: Clyde of Georgetown, KY, Susan Brown & her husband: David of Crown Point, IN & Carol Carr & her husband: Dennis of Avon, IN; his son: Ronnie May & his wife: Mary of Ormond Beach, FL; his grandchildren: Ronald Gene May & his wife: Tammy, T.R. Bear & his wife: Lindy, Heather Kester & her husband: Jason, Bryan David Brown & his wife: Heather, Ronald Scott Brown & his wife: Erin, Megan Moore, Haley Rhoades & her husband: Chris, Brooke Speheger & her husband: Matthew & Brandon Carr & his wife: Kayla; his great-grandchildren: Ashley, Jayden, Jorja, Annabelle, Clayton, Issac, Jonas, Abram, Joshua, John Thomas, Grant, Jacob & Joseph; brothers: Kenneth May of Vevay, IN & Carlos May of Hanover, IN; his sisters: Mary Jane Fuller of Madison, IN & Thelma Eve of Lexington, KY & his several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas Benton, Sr. & Mabel (Welch) May; his loving wife of 64 years: Carmethia Ann (Tullis) May, died September 22, 2014; his grandson: Clayton Gregory "Greg" Bear, died January 20, 2010; his sister: Evelyn Willhoite & his brothers: Ben May, Leslie May & James T. May, Sr.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at 11:00 am, by Rev. Wayne Daugherty at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
