Life Story for Carroll N. Scudder

Carroll N.  Scudder
Mr. Carroll Norman Scudder, age 96, of Fairview, Indiana, entered this life on August 18, 1919, on Bethel Ridge in Florence, Indiana, son of the late, Edwin and Olive (Slack) Scudder. He was a 1937 graduate of Patriot High School. He was united in marriage on December 24, 1940, by Rev. Tom Jennings at the Fairview United Methodist Parsonage to Mavis Irene Cole. This happy union was blessed with one son, Larry Dean Scudder who was born soon after their marriage and passed away on May 28, 2012. Carroll and Mavis shared nearly 72 loving years of marriage together until Mavis passed away on August 19, 2012. Carroll was inducted into the United States Army on May 3, 1944 at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, serving during World War II. He trained at the Ft. McClellan, Alabama then he was sent to Wisconsin where he left for active duty. He served in heavy weapons company “D” with a nine millimeter mortar, 385th Regiment, 76th Division, 3rd Army under General George Patton. He fought in the battles of Ardennes, Rhineland, and in Central Europe. Carroll fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and helped free a prisoner of war camp at Konigstern, and the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald. He earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, The Combat Infantry Badge and the World War II Victory Badge. Carroll was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on October 22, 1945 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. Carroll took over his father’s farm on Bethel Ridge then later moved to the Fairview community where he ran a large dairy farm for J. Tandy. He drove a school bus for 30 years for the Switzerland County School Corporation while still farming. In 1953 he and his wife purchased the Dilver Moreillon Farm near Fairview, Indiana where he farmed and continued driving a school bus. After their marriage, Carroll worked for Clorin Phillips hauling coal from the coal mines back in Kentucky. Later he moved to Vevay where he and his wife took over Bruners Store & Hatchery. He went to Ivy Tech Community College in Cincinnati, Ohio while his wife operated the store. After he graduated he worked as a welder for Michael’s Arts & Bronze in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served as Cotton Township Trustee for 4 years. He served on the ASCS Board and Office for Switzerland County. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church serving on the administration board and many others. He was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396. Carroll resided all of his life in the Switzerland County community and will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. Carroll passed away at 7:30 pm, Monday, December 28, 2015, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Carroll will be dearly missed by his loving granddaughters: Melanie Ann Scudder & Jennifer (Scudder) Wesley of Fairview, IN; his great-grandson: Michael Dean Wesley of Fairview, IN; his nieces that cared for him: Tanya Curry of East Enterprise, IN & Debbie Kappes of Fairview, IN & other numerous nieces & nephews; his sister: Bonnie Niles & her husband: Ralph of Erlanger, KY; his brothers: Leland Scudder & his wife: Faye of Dillsboro, IN & John Scudder of Quail Valley, CA; his sisters-in-law: Marcella Cole & Wilma Cole both of Fairview, IN & his brother-in-law: Alvin Cole of Fairview, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Edwin & Olive (Slack) Scudder; his son: Larry Dean Scudder, died May 28, 2012; his brothers & sisters-in-law: Reynold "Renny" & Marla Scudder, Earl Edwin & Nora Scudder & his sister and brother-in-law: Elizabeth & Harry Cheek.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 11:00 am, by Bro. Hobert Byrd, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment & full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185, the Vevay VFW Post #5396 and the Fort Knox Ceremonial Unit in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.

Friends may call 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, January 1, 2016, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.
