Mrs. Betty Jo (Carlton) West-Smith-Garland, age 69, of Vevay, Indiana, entered this life on April 21, 1948, in Bennington, Indiana, the daughter of the late, Ray and Naomi (Morris) Carlton. She was raised in Switzerland County, Indiana where she was a 1968 graduate of the Vevay High School. Betty was united in marriage on May 3, 1984, in Dillsboro, Indiana, to Leland Ray "Dick" West and they shared nine years of marriage together until he passed away on December 11, 1993. She was later united in marriage on July 9, 1996 at the Fairview Baptist Church, to Frederick Richard "Rick" Smith and they shared 12 years of marriage together until he passed away on April 26, 2008. Betty was later united in marriage on June 9, 2016, at the Swiss Villa Nursing Home in Vevay, Indiana, to Harold Garland. Betty and Harold shared over one year of marriage together until her death. Betty was employed as the 911 coordinator for the Switzerland County Sheriff's Department, retiring in November 2005, after 16 years of service. Betty was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church in Fairview, Indiana. She enjoyed collecting dolls, clothes and attending yard sales. Betty died at 2:37 am, Thursday, September 7, 2017, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Betty will be dearly missed by her husband: Harold Garland of Vevay, IN; her daughters: Sheila Alcorn and her husband: Sherman of Louisville, KY and Patricia O'Bryant of Louisville, KY; her son: Kenneth Russell, Sr. of Louisville, KY; her daughter-in-law: Bonnie Russell of Madison, IN; her grandchildren: Marlena Alcorn, William Steven Russell, Chase Damrow and Becky Justice; her brother: Bro. Wayne Carlton of East Enterprise, IN and her dear friend: Irene Martin of Bennington, IN and her numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ray and Naomi (Morris) Carlton; her 1st husband: Leland Ray "Dick" West, died December 11, 1993; her 2nd husband, Frederick Richard "Rick" Smith, died April 26, 2008; her grandson: Kenneth Lee Russell, Jr., died May 11, 2006; her sisters: Mary Jane Carlton and Evangeline Hazelip and her brother: Bro. Eugene Carlton.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 12:00 pm, by Bro. Hobert Byrd, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
